FAQs about Apprentice Hours and the Practical Exam

Can I teach another IM=X instructor in my practical exam video?
Yes, while you may NOT train another IM=X apprentice/instructor for your apprentice hours, you MAY train another apprentice/instructor for your practical exam video.

Do I have to show all the variations?
No, you do not need to teach every variation of every exercise, but you should know them and be able to demonstrate how to incorporate the bar and ring into the Floorwork and you must apply the fundamentals in all sequences.  If you are testing out in person, your Master Trainer may ask you to show other variations.

What level class should I teach?
Teach an intermediate level class, using a variety of tempo, equipment, and intensity levels.  Make sure to use the verbal and tactile cues to demonstrate that you know how to apply the fundamentals in all sequences. Be able to show modifications to accommodate clients who are more or less fit.  If you are testing out in person, your Master Trainer may ask how you would accommodate various clients with special needs.

Do I need to show full repetitions?
No, but you need to know and indicate the appropriate number of repetitions and you must use the verbal and tactile cues which apply the fundamentals in all exercises.  You should do enough repetitions to properly demonstrate and cue the exercise, using manual cues if necessary.

Do I need to say the name of each exercise and sequence?
You should say the name of each sequence as you begin teaching it. You should say the exercises if they fit naturally in the cueing but proper application of the fundamentals is what we are looking for. While you would not always say the names of your exercises to your clients, you should know them and know the sequence as given in your manual.  This memorization is essential for you to progress onto the advanced courses and hybrid formats. If testing out in person, your Master Trainer may ask you the names of the exercises and sequences.

Do I need to hand in my apprentice hours prior to the practical exam?
Yes, you need to have completed your apprentice hours, documented them, and mail them in prior to or with your practical exam video. If testing out in person, you can send them in ahead or bring them with you when you test out.

FAQ – Apprentice Hours

How many apprentice hours do I need to do?
Basic Certification (Floorwork + Xercizer): 40 (20 Floor/20 Xercizer)
Floorwork Certification only: 20
Xercizer (reformer) Certification only: 20

Can I train another IM=X apprentice/instructor for my apprentice hours?
You can train another IM=X apprentice/instructor, and are encouraged to do so. But it will NOT count toward your apprentice hours. Your apprentice hours must be done on NON-IM=X instructors, i.e., regular people, family, friends, civilians, etc.

Can I make a checklist for my apprentice hours?
No, your apprenticeship is your practice time, and writing out your apprentice hours will help you learn the program, memorize the sequences, and remember the appropriate repetitions and springloads. You must write out each session indicating the sequence, exercise, cues and fundamentals.

Can I type them out on a computer?
Yes, you may either write out your hours longhand or type them into your computer. But you do need to create a new document/page for each client, and write out/enter everything you do, every time. Again – this is to assist in your complete memorization of the eight sequences. (Keep in mind tradtional pilates certifications can require as many as 300 hours!)

How much do I need to write?
You need to write a brief history/background on the client, just a few sentences. Then list each sequence, and under it each exercise you do with your client. Include the variation, equipment used, reps, springload, and any modifications. Be sure to apply the fundamentals throughout the workout by using the verbal and tactile cues.

If I train a client more than once, do I need to write it up every time?
Yes, you write out every workout you do with every client.
